Suicide Alertness Session

Posted on:

In September, in partnership with local mental health and suicide prevention partners, Birmingham City Council Public Health will be launching a Suicide Prevention campaign to encourage residents to engage in open, compassionate, and empathetic conversations about suicide.

Suicide can affect anyone, regardless of background or life experiences, and can devastate entire families and communities. By normalising conversations about suicide, Birmingham residents may feel more comfortable seeking help, and others can be better equipped to offer meaningful, compassionate support during difficult moments.

With the aim to make suicide Birmingham’s business and encourage compassionate and open conversations around suicide, Birmingham residents are invited to attend our free one-hour Lunch and Learn session on Tuesday 9th September at 12pm: Suicide Alertness Bitesize Session Tickets, Tue, Sep 9, 2025 at 12:00 PM | Eventbrite

This training session is aimed at anyone who wants to learn more about suicide, how to know when someone may be having thoughts of suicide, how to talk directly and comfortably about suicide, and what we can all do to offer practical support. The session covers:

  • Getting informed about suicide
  • Being aware of the signs someone may be having thoughts of suicide that could be at work or within the home, in your friend or sports group, in your neighbourhood, but also spotting the signs with someone you don’t know
  • Advice and guidance to talk about suicide openly in the workplace, to family members, friends or within the wider community
  • The importance of asking directly
  • Listening compassionately
  • Building support around the person
  • Being willing to check in
  • Looking after yourself

This online session is delivered on Teams by dedicated and experienced suicide prevention trainers at Every Life Matters – Suicide Safer Cumbria. Participants also receive a PDF course worksheet and a post-course handbook.
